Using PubMed searches in Silvi
Silvi lets you import papers directly from PubMed. Here's how:
What is PubMed?
PubMed is a free online database of biomedical and life sciences literature. It’s maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology at the United States National Library of Medicine.
With more than 38 million citations, PubMed is one of the most widely used databases for biomedical research and is considered an indispensable resource when it comes to conducting systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses, which form the foundation of evidence-based medicine.
How to search in PubMed?
1. PubMed lets you run both basic and more complex searches.
To run a basic search, go to https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ and type your search terms (e.g. diabetes treatment) in the search box.
PubMed will show you the titles of all the papers and studies containing the words "diabetes treatment."
If you click on the title of a paper, PubMed will show you its abstract. In the case of open access papers, PubMed will show you the complete paper.
2. You can also use Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) to run more complex searches in PubMed.
For example, if you run a search using the following search terms
PubMed will show you papers and studies containing both the words "diabetes" and "exercise."
The Boolean operator AND is usually used to narrow down your search results.
3. If you run a search using the following search terms
PubMed will show you papers and studies containing the any of these terms.
The Boolean operator OR is usually used to combine synonyms and to expand your search results.
4. The Boolean operator NOT tells PubMed to exclude articles containing a specific term.
If you run
PubMed will show you papers and studies on all kinds of cancers except lung cancer.
5. PubMed also has an "Advanced Search Builder" feature that lets you build a search string systematically.
To build a search string, click on "Advanced" under the search bar.
In the search box, enter the term you want to look up. To add a Boolean operator, click on the "ADD" button and add the desired Boolean operator.
Once you are done, your search string will appear in the "Query box" below.
Click on the "Search" button and PubMed will show the relevant results.
6. PubMed also lets you filter results by publication dates, article types, languages, and full text availability.
